What if knowing the procedure isn't enough?
In offshore rig moving operations, mistakes are rarely just incorrect answers. Depending on the situation, they can compromise safety, disrupt operations, and generate significant financial losses.
Procedures exist. Regulations exist.
Yet when people must make decisions under pressure, knowing the content does not always mean applying it correctly.
That became the starting point of this project.
Knowing a procedure doesn't guarantee good decisions.
What was the real challenge?
The challenge wasn't to transform procedures into training.
It was to transform technical knowledge into confident decision-making.
More than presenting information, the learning experience needed to help professionals interpret situations, understand consequences, and make safer decisions in realistic operational contexts.
That perspective guided every design decision.
How did this perspective shape the solution?
The learning experience was designed to connect theory with practice, prioritizing understanding over memorization.
To achieve that, every design decision followed a few core principles:
- Ground technical content in realistic operational scenarios.
- Encourage reasoning before answering.
- Translate complex concepts through clear visual communication.
- Connect procedures to the decisions professionals make in the field.
Every design decision aimed to reduce the gap between learning and doing.
How did the strategy come to life?
The result was an interactive learning experience for professionals involved in critical offshore rig moving operations.
Technical content, scenario-based exercises, and interactive activities were combined to bring learning closer to real operational contexts.
At the time, the project also incorporated technologies that were still uncommon in corporate learning. More importantly, those technologies were never the goal. They served a single purpose: helping professionals think critically, connect theory with practice, and make better decisions.
What this project reinforced
This project reinforced a belief that still guides my work today.
When decisions are complex, learning must build understanding, not simply deliver information.
This project showed me that the real challenge of Learning Experience Design is not simplifying complexity.
It is creating the conditions for people to understand complexity without oversimplifying it.
